Hogar grew up in an unusual household; his mother, Rhyanon, was a famous ranger and guide. That is until she found herself with child. Hogar never knew if he was the product of a loving relationship or rape as his mother never talked about his father other than in exasperation “you stomp around like your father in the woods.” “Or son go out the stream and bath yourself, you’d think your father and half of his clan were in this room by the way it smells in here.” As he grew up he found that he loved the woods and all of nature, partly because it seemed as though he could read the skies and understand what the trees and animals were trying to tell him, but mostly because in the wilderness, no one could find him to make fun of him or try to hurt him. His mother marveled at how fast he would catch on to her teachings and was truly amazed when he successfully took down an Owlbear that was torturing a black panther cub. She was even more impressed when she saw the connection between her son and Shadow who was destined to be his constant companion and after her death only friend.

After his mother died Hogar set out to find out who is father is and demand answers as to why he was branded with a spider dripping what appeared to be blood or venom on the back of his left hand. Since every time he asked Rhyanon she would only reply “I didn’t want that to happen to you, but your father stole you out of your crib banded you with that mark and left only his smell and a note that read So he knows where he truly belongs when he comes of age.” Hogar has decided that until he knows what this mark means no one else shall see it, so he keeps it covered with a leather fingerless glove.

Despite being able to almost read Shadow’s mind and understanding almost all that nature has to tell one who will listen, Hogar has such an aversion to magic that it is almost a phobia.
